Sports and social events coming up

What a tremendous opening weekend! It was perfect weather to kick off the season! We packed a lot of activities into a few days: two happy hours, the Memorial Day cookout, the FINS swim and dive introductory meetings, volleyball tournament and a fantastic music performance by Valentine Slim! Thank you all who volunteered to help us put together these events and thank you members for coming out to celebrate the start of Summer!

What’s happening this week … first things, first. Here are the hours of operation for Friday, May 31-Thursday, June 6:

  • Friday: 3:30 pm – 9 pm
  • Saturday: 10 am – 9 pm
  • Sunday: 10 am – 8 pm
  • Monday-Thursday: 3:30 pm – 8 pm

Keep an eye on the skies … Summer invariably brings late-afternoon storms and other weather that could affect our schedule. While light rain may not close the pool, please note that each time the lifeguards even hear thunder, they must evacuate the pool and the surrounding area for 45 minutes. Please listen to them and follow their instructions as we all want everyone to stay safe!

If you are on the swim and dive teams, the coaches or reps will let you know if practice is suspended or cancelled due to weather.

And you can always call the front desk (301-585-1185) to find out the pool’s status. That’ll be more reliable than waiting for me to update the pool’s website.

Social events coming up … Make sure to check out the nifty social calendar on the board near the water fountain for a complete listing of the 2019 events! Our next official activities are:

  • Trivia Night, Friday, June 7 — Join us for a fun evening of Q&A. You’ll be part of a team so don’t worry if you don’t know who starred in the 1979 prequel to “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”* or how many bones there are in the human body.**
  • School’s Out Mega-Party with Music and a Movie, Friday, June 14 — It’s kids night at the pool as we’re planning an ice cream social, teen-favorite music and a screening of “The Greatest Showman” starring Hugh Jackman and Zendaya. This one needs volunteers: Take a look and SIGN UP to help us out!

A message for the dive team families … Please visit learn about the dive team and to register your child. If your child wants to try the team, register them and then you can send them to practice. If it doesn’t work for them, let us know by June 10 and we will issue you a refund of the $100 registration fee (but not the $15 insurance fee). Some new folks came to the Memorial Day meeting, but we didn’t get everyone’s email address. Please let the dive reps know if you have any questions or haven’t received any email messages directly from them. You can reach Dawn and Katie, the reps, here: Let’s Go FINS!

Ever wanted to learn how to play volleyball? … On Thursday, June 6 (6:30 pm – 8 pm), four super-talented teens will introduce you to the fundamentals of this fun sport. This seminar is open to anyone 13 years old and up. You’ll learn the basics from how to hit the ball to the proper way to set your teammate for a killer spike. The class will also be offered on Thursday, June 13, if you aren’t able to make this one.

Tennis, anyone? … Please join us for friendly pick-up doubles tennis Monday nights, 6.30 pm (adults only). E-mail to be added to the mailing list (as times may vary during the year).
